“Overwatch” is the latest game from the legendary Blizzard, a studio best known for its RPG and strategy titles. Their gamble on the popular FPS genre paid off, delivering a shooter that’s easy to learn and technically polished on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. Initially, the game offers countless multiplayer matches, with two teams of six heroes each. Objectives in each match range from escorting a payload to its destination, to capturing and defending key points on the map—much like the classic “Capture the Flag” mode common to many FPS titles.
These clear, straightforward goals make the game inviting even to newcomers. First, because it doesn’t follow a pure deathmatch format—where the winner is simply whoever racks up the most kills—and second, because it forces you, whether solo or with your team, to decide which task is most critical at any given moment.
Another standout feature is its incredible ability system. Thanks to it, you can craft endless strategies during a match—all in a beautifully balanced way that makes it rare for any one hero to dominate the battlefield.
This balance is truly commendable: in Overwatch every one of the 21 heroes has strengths and weaknesses that level the playing field, making player skill the ultimate weapon for achieving objectives.
Visually, Blizzard opted for a pleasing, cohesive art style rather than an endless pursuit of realism. Instead of lifelike characters and environments, you get heroes and villains with a delightful, cartoonish vibe.
Still, real‑world references abound—maps set in Hollywood, Mexico, Greece, and Japan, and heroes inspired by iconic figures such as Soldier 76, Tracer, and Hanzo. All of it is delivered with a healthy dose of humor, much like your favorite animated films.
Unfortunately, even in 2016 we still face challenges around game localization. Some titles, rather than delighting players with native‑language voice acting, end up driving them away with poor performances or amateur casting.
Overwatch handles this issue admirably. While the game isn’t dialogue‑heavy, the few lines you hear come from some of the top voice actors in the country—delivering a polished performance that truly enhances immersion.
