How to update the Nintendo Switch system

Checking the system version

Before you begin, it’s important to check which version of system software your Nintendo Switch is running. To do this, follow the steps below:


  • From the console’s home screen, select “Settings”.
  • Scroll down to “System” and select that option.
  • Scroll down to “System Software Version” and check which version is currently installed.

If your system software version is lower than the latest version available, you can update your console by following the steps below.

Updating the Nintendo Switch

Before updating the Nintendo Switch, make sure the console is connected to the internet and has sufficient battery power. Also, make sure the console is not in use during the upgrade process.

  • From the console’s home screen, select “Settings”.
  • Scroll down to “System” and select that option.
  • Scroll down to “System Update” and select that option.
  • Select “Update” and wait for the update to download.
  • Once the download is complete, select “Install” and wait for the update to install.
  • When the update is complete, Nintendo Switch will automatically restart.

  • To update games and apps, follow the steps below:
  • On your console’s home screen, select the game or app you want to update.
  • Press the “+” button on the Joy-Con or Pro controller to open the options menu.
  • Select “Update” and wait for the update to download and install.
  • When the update is complete, the game or app will automatically restart.
