When the Sun, Moon, and Earth align (during new moons and full moons), we experience “spring tides,” which are higher and lower than usual. Conversely, when the Sun and Moon are at right angles relative to Earth (during the first and last quarters of the Moon), we experience “neap tides,” which are lower high tides and higher low tides.
